Epidendrum
Plant Diary

May '07 - Once or twice a day I go out to the forums at Dave's Garden to see what people are interested in. Gardeners can be a passionate bunch and it is enjoyable to watch a topic, typically in the Florida Gardening forum, where the contributors find it hard to contain their enthusiasm. One recent posting talked about how easy it was to grow Epidendrum Orchids, especially the "ground orchid" varieties, and how they produced profuse flowers. Their enthusiasm was contagious.

The next place I visited was eBay where I purchased these three reed stem Epidendra that will hopefully flower gloriously in purple, white and a brilliant red.

July '08 - I have not had much luck with the Epidendra. The red variety has sent out a few blooms, but the other two have had none. In addition, they have been very slow growers. Part of the problem may have been that I kept them in direct sun light, so I now have them hiding under a Ligustrum. The plants are beginning to send out new branches, but my guess is that I will have to be patient.
